Are we human or are we dancer?

The Killers - BST Hyde Park - Saturday 8th July 2017

The Killers might have been asking a philosophical question back in 2008, but in the age of digital overload, it’s a question HR departments are grappling with too. ‘Human’ is the new buzzword (sadly, not ‘dancer’).

Organisations all around us are plastering it across their mission statements and culture decks. But is it just lip service, or are they truly embracing what it means to be human in a world increasingly dominated by algorithms?

There’s good reason for this human focus. As technology continues its march forward, human connection has become more valuable than ever. We crave authentic interactions, empathy, and a sense of belonging – things AI just can’t replicate (yet!).

But here’s the twist: being human is messy. It’s about navigating complex emotions, building genuine connections, and a culture built on trust. It’s about creating an environment where vulnerability is seen as strength, not weakness.

So, how do we bridge the gap between the human ideal and the messy reality? Here are a few tips:

  • Define Your ‘Human: Don’t just throw the word ‘human’ around. What does it mean in the context of your company? Is it about open communication? Sparking creativity? Prioritising mental health?
  • Walk the Walk: Having a ping-pong table in the break room doesn’t make you human-centric. Align your policies and practices with your ‘human’ vision. Does your leadership team model open communication? Do your performance reviews focus on growth, not just numbers?
  • Embrace the Imperfect: Humanity is about mistakes, too. Create a culture where it’s safe to fail, learn, and grow.

Let’s be honest, being human is hard. It requires constant effort and a commitment to building something genuine. But in a world increasingly focused on efficiency and automation, it might just be our secret weapon.

So, the next time you hear ‘human’ being thrown around, ask yourself: are we just dancing around the issue, or are we truly becoming more human?
