Slow Down, You’re Missing the Point

The "Paceometer"-A speedometer showing values of pace (minutes per 10 miles) at selected levels of speed (mph).

It’s often the case that the relentless pursuit of efficiency often overshadows the value of taking your time. We’re conditioned to believe that faster is always better, from our morning commute to our productivity hacks. But what if I told you that sometimes, taking your time can actually lead to better outcomes?

Rory Sutherland, a renowned speaker and advertising guru, makes a compelling case for this counterintuitive idea. In his talk at Nudgestock 2024, he explains the value of many things lies not just in the end result, but in the process itself. Think about it: the ‘joy’ of writing an essay often comes from the exploration of ideas, not just the final grade. The pleasure of a train journey lies in the changing scenery, not merely reaching the destination at all costs.

So, why should we embrace a slower pace to things in our lives?

  • Deeper Appreciation: When we slow down, we allow ourselves to truly savor the moment. We become more mindful of our surroundings, our thoughts, and our emotions. This can lead to a deeper appreciation for life’s simple pleasures – taking time to smell the roses.
  • Better Decision-Making: Rushing through decisions often leads to regret. By taking your time, you allow for careful consideration of all options. This can lead to more informed and satisfying choices.
  • Increased Creativity: When we’re not constantly rushing, our minds have space to wander and make connections. This can spark creativity and innovation.
  • Improved Relationships: It’s easy to neglect our relationships when we’re rushing around and being busy. Slowing down allows us to spend quality time with loved ones, building stronger bonds.

Of course, there are times when speed is essential – no one is winning a gold medal at the Olympics for taking there time to complete the 100 metres. But let’s not forget the value of slowing down. By incorporating more deliberate pauses into our lives, we can experience greater fulfillment, make better decisions, and nurture deeper connections.

So, the next time you find yourself rushing, take a deep breath and consider slowing down. You might be surprised at the rewards.
